Multimedia is a big domain but basically all comes down to sound and video/photo. Many people focus more on the video/photo media but why ignore or show less interest in sound. Sound is a very interesting thing. I mean sure maybe you will find the complexity of an eye more interesting than that of an ear, but is this enough reason to neglect such an interesting and fascinating domain?
For example did you know that the whole mathematical notions of exponential and logarithms was invented because of how a human being hears? Yes, well it is a proven fact that we can hear weakest sounds and also some high tones in a certain dB range. The way we manage to hear such a wide range of sounds is because our hearing is logarithmic based. More on wikipedia
Sure we can go more indepth with the whole notion and talk only about Speech hearing but I have planed something else for you.
Sound applications in multimedia
First of all we need to get some audio so that we have something to work with. As far as I know there are lots of computer software that can record voice or just about anything else.
The tools I use:
http://voice-software.org/voice-recording-software/fast-sound-recorder.html
http://voice-software.org/voice-recording-software/cool-record-edit-deluxe.html
So once the sound is gathered you now have something to work with. In multimedia to the current day unless you are a pro you can't do much with sound. But I know some tools that can do the following:
- change your voice
- remove voice from a music track
- text to speech software
- speech to text software
Not so many applications.. If you wonder why, well don't. It's all because of the trend in multimedia. Video seems more important than sound. Why? Because we make it be this way.
Before you accept that too don't forget what sound can do: entertain, amaze, scare you.

Past, Future, Present
In order for us to foresee the future we must first look into how things were in the past.
Sure you might already know that computers advance very quickly and there is actually even a formula that is so accurate that it predicted that personal computer specifications will advance as they did.
Although computer power was significantly less then than it is now, there were some pretty interesting applications available in multimedia. Mankind has always been captivated with this domain. However the concept of multimedia was born as we know it today only after more than a decade from the computer's birth. In the past you needed to write code pages long just to be able to draw an ellipsoid. Now you can do one at a click of a button (you don't even need to know the mathematical formula).
The big question: How will things look for multimedia into the future?
A thing is for sure. We can see the multimedia trend. Virtual reality is more than a vision: many games are small or bigger VRs. Advance foto, audio, video editing tools take advantage of all the computing power they have.
Games in general is where most of the world feels the effect of multimedia. How sound joins with what you see makes you love computers. How couldn't you? How couldn't anyone love the computer? (Multimedia in games is widely seen worldwide)
So, back to the main subject, as I see multimedia will even further develop to a point that it can no longer be implemented because of hardware limitations. Could this be possible? If multimedia has a growth rate bigger then computing power has than this will be the future. I guess that time will tell.
